A sequel, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II, was released in 2004 for non-Nintendo consoles. It is also the first game in the Baldur's Gate series released on consoles as opposed to a PC and/or Mac.ĭark Alliance was well received on all four platforms, with the PlayStation 2 version going on to win the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences award for " Console Role-Playing Game of the Year" ( 2002). It is the first video game to implement the real time application of the new rules. The game is set in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting of Dungeons & Dragons, and the gameplay is based on the rules of Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition, which were released in 2000. In 2021, a 4K port of the game was released for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and PC. CD Projekt was developing a version for Microsoft Windows, but was ultimately cancelled. The Sunset Mountains and the Marsh of Chelimber, the two main areas of the first game, are only mentioned, never actually featured in the gameplay.Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance is a 2001 action role-playing video game developed by Snowblind Studios and published by Interplay Entertainment subsidiary Black Rock Studios for the PlayStation 2 and the Xbox consoles, with High Voltage Software handling the GameCube port, and Magic Pockets developing the Game Boy Advance version. All of the Elemental Planes are also visited (in the first game, only the Elemental Plane of Water featured). The High Moor, Skull Gorge, the Battle of Bones and the Keep of Pale Knight, areas lying outside the city, are also accessible. The Old Warehouse, the Firewind Manor, Omduil's Manor, the Church of Helm and Bloodmire Manor are other explorable areas within the city. While the Elfsong Tavern can be seen, it is not accessible, instead the player is able to go to the Purple Wyrm Tavern instead. Unlike the previous game, many more areas of Baldur's Gate itself are accessible, although the sewers return as an explorable region. Many areas in the Baldur's Gate region are explored during the game, such as Cloak Wood, Trollbark Forest, The Wood of Sharp Teeth and Wayfork Village. While the original game focussed on many areas scattered throughout the Sword Coast and Western Heartlands, the second game is predominately based in and around the city of Baldur's Gate.
